History of development - Volkovysk

Volkovysk is one of the oldest cities in Belarus and Eastern Europe; there is an opinion that it was founded back in the 10th century. This statement is confirmed by the results of archaeological excavations. For a long period of time it was believed that the first written mention of the city was an entry in Ipatiev Chronicle, where it is said that in 1252 Galician-Volyn princes Daniel and his brother Vasilka Romanovich invaded the Lithuanian lands of Mindaugas. However, thanks to later research by historians, it was proven that Volkovysk was founded earlier - in 1005, a record of this is available in the handwritten patericon “Turov Bishop’s Testament of Blessed Vladimir.”

The history of the origin of the city's name is shrouded in many legends. According to one version, the name of the city comes from the robbers Voloka and Visek, who operated in these parts back in the 18th century. In 738, a certain Vatislav Zaveiko killed the robbers and built 10 huts on the site of their graves, which gave the name to the city. According to another version, the name of the city was given by the Volkovyya River, which flows through Volkovysk and is a tributary of the Ross River. The river had this name because it flowed through impassable forest thickets, in which there were many wolves.

Volkovysk grew and developed quite quickly: this was largely facilitated by its favorable geographical location: the city was located on the route connecting the basins of the Dnieper, Western Bug and Neman. Russia was connected to the Neman, which gave access to the Baltic Sea. At the beginning of the 13th century, Volkovysk was part of the Principality of Polotsk, in the middle of the century - in Galicia-Volyn, and by the end of the century it became part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

Like many ancient cities, Volkovysk was destroyed and rebuilt many times during its history. By the beginning of the 16th-17th centuries, about 5 thousand people lived in the city. IN 1503 Volkovysk received Magdeburg law, and since 1507 it has been the center of the district of Novogrudok Voivodeship. In the Middle Ages, Volkovysk was a city of traders and artisans who made weapons, shoes, clothing, dishes, wine and beer, as well as fur processing. For some time, the city was the center of diplomacy - ambassadors and senators of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania came here.

During the period of numerous wars XVII-XIX centuries, especially the Russian-Swedish years 1656-1658 and 1700-1721, the city burned to the ground more than once. After the third partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1795, Volkovysk was annexed to the Russian Empire. During the Napoleonic War of 1812, the city was occupied by French troops for six months. During the First World War, the city was occupied by German troops (1915-1919). Afterwards the city came under Polish occupation. According to the terms Riga Peace Treaty of 1921 Western Belarus came under Polish control and the city became part of the Second Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth until 1939. On September 18, 1939, the city was annexed Soviet troops and Western Belarus became part of the BSSR.
Volkovysk was captured by German troops on the third day of the Great Patriotic War- June 28, 1941, fierce fighting broke out in the city. During the war, there was a ghetto in Volkovysk, in which about 20 thousand Jews died. The city was liberated from the Nazi invaders July 14, 1944 units of the 2nd Belorussian Front during the Bialystok offensive operation.

Currently, Volkovysk is a modern industrial center: there are more than 29 industrial enterprises in the city, and there are sports and cultural institutions.
